Past simple  +  while +  past continuous
Past continuous + when +  past simple
It was raining while I was having breakfast.
When I was having breakfast, it was raining.

It was one a lovely, spring Sunday morning, the bluebirds were chirping softly / happily, the sun was shining brightly, people were lying lazily  on the green grass and smelling the blooming flowers that were growing in the ground.
